Mark 4:3–20

Living in Florida, we understand hurricanes.

A beautiful sunny day doesn’t tell you how well a house was built. You discover that when the hurricane arrives.

The winds begin to blow. The rain starts coming sideways. Trees bend. Branches break. Everything that wasn’t secured begins to move.

The storm reveals what was strong and what only looked strong.

There is a spiritual parallel in the Parable of the Sower found in Mark 4:3–20.

Jesus describes a farmer scattering seed. Some falls by the wayside. Some falls on stony ground. Some among thorns. And some falls on good ground.

The seed represents the Word of God.

But what happens to that Word depends upon the condition of the soil.

And one of those soils teaches us something incredibly important about becoming Hurricane Proof Christians.

What Happens When the Storm Comes?

Jesus describes the seed that fell on stony ground:

“These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves…” — Mark 4:16–17

They heard the Word.

They received the Word.

They were excited about the Word.

But there was a problem.

They had no root.

Then Jesus says that when tribulation or persecution arose because of the Word, they stumbled.

Notice Jesus said when, not if.

The storm came.

And when it did, their spiritual condition was exposed.

Their problem wasn’t that they had never heard God’s Word. Their problem was that the Word had never developed deep roots inside them.

Shallow Christianity Cannot Survive Deep Storms

This is something the Church desperately needs to understand.

You can attend church and still have shallow roots.

You can listen to Christian music and still have shallow roots.

You can watch sermons online and still have shallow roots.

You can even become emotionally excited about Jesus and still have shallow roots.

Jesus said these people initially received the Word with gladness.

There was excitement.

There was enthusiasm.

There was a response.

But there wasn’t enough depth.

And when the hurricane hit, they weren’t prepared.

There are Christians who love God when everything is going well but begin questioning Him when circumstances become difficult.

“God, where are You?”

“Why did You allow this?”

“Why hasn’t my prayer been answered?”

“Why am I going through this?”

Those are real questions. But storms reveal whether our relationship with God is built primarily upon circumstances or upon the unchanging truth of His Word.

If your faith only works when life works, your roots aren’t deep enough yet.

Hurricanes Reveal the Roots

Have you ever watched trees during a hurricane?

Some enormous trees come crashing down while others remain standing.

What matters isn’t only what you can see above the ground.

What is happening beneath the surface matters tremendously.

That’s true spiritually.

People see your church attendance.

God sees your roots.

People see your social media posts.

God sees your roots.

People hear you say, “Praise the Lord!”

God sees your roots.

What happens when nobody is watching?

Are you praying?

Are you reading the Word?

Are you spending time in God’s presence?

Are you listening to the Holy Spirit?

Are you obeying God when obedience costs you something?

That’s where roots grow.

Then There Are the Thorns

Jesus describes another dangerous condition:

“And these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” — Mark 4:18–19

These people didn’t necessarily abandon the Word.

Something else choked it.

Jesus identifies three things:

The cares of this world.

The deceitfulness of riches.

The desire for other things.

Think about how relevant that is today.

We’re surrounded by distractions.

Careers.

Money.

Entertainment.

Social media.

Possessions.

Status.

Politics.

Relationships.

Ambitions.

None of those things necessarily have to be sinful to become spiritual thorns.

Anything that continually competes with God for first place in your heart can eventually choke your spiritual life.

You can become so busy building your life that you neglect the One who gave you life.

Then Jesus Describes Good Ground

Thank God the story doesn’t end with shallow soil or thorns.

Jesus says:

“But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” — Mark 4:20

That’s where I want to live.

Good ground.

The Word goes in.

The Word takes root.

The Word grows.

And eventually, the Word produces fruit.

Notice that spiritual maturity isn’t merely measured by how much Word you hear.

It’s measured by what the Word produces in your life.

Are you becoming more loving?

More faithful?

More forgiving?

More generous?

More obedient?

More courageous about sharing Jesus?

More sensitive to the Holy Spirit?

More like Christ?

That’s fruit.

Become Hurricane Proof

A Hurricane Proof Christian isn’t someone who never experiences storms.

It is someone whose roots go deep enough that the storm cannot separate them from Jesus.

When persecution comes:

I’m still following Jesus.

When disappointment comes:

I’m still following Jesus.

When the prayer hasn’t been answered yet:

I’m still following Jesus.

When money gets tight:

I’m still following Jesus.

When people walk away:

I’m still following Jesus.

When culture tells me God’s Word is outdated:

I’m still following Jesus.

When everything around me is shaking:

I’m still following Jesus!

Why?

Because my relationship with Jesus isn’t sitting on the surface anymore.

I’ve developed roots.

So examine your soil today.

Are there rocks that need to be removed?

Are there thorns choking God’s Word?

Have the cares of this world become more important than the things of God?

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal them.

Then dig deeper.

Get into God’s Word.

Develop your prayer life.

Spend time worshiping.

Pray in the Spirit.

Obey what God tells you.

Don’t be satisfied merely hearing the Word.

Let it take root.

Because storms will come.

And when they do, may we be found standing, growing, and producing fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Become a Hurricane Proof Christian.

Declaration

I declare that the Word of God is taking deep root in my heart. I will not be a shallow Christian who withers when trouble comes. I refuse to allow the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, or the desire for other things to choke God’s Word in my life. I am good ground. I will hear the Word, receive the Word, obey the Word, and produce fruit for the Kingdom of God. When storms come, I will remain faithful. When pressure comes, I will stand. My roots are growing deeper in Jesus Christ every day. I will produce thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold fruit for His glory. I am becoming a Hurricane Proof Christian. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Prayer

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, examine the soil of our hearts today.

Holy Spirit, reveal anything preventing Your Word from developing deep roots inside us.

Remove the stones.

Pull out the thorns.

Expose the distractions.

Show us anything we have allowed to compete with You for first place in our hearts.

Lord, we don’t want a shallow Christianity that disappears when trouble comes. We want deep roots.

Give us a hunger for Your Word.

Give us a passion for prayer.

Teach us to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Give us courage to obey You even when obedience is difficult.

When persecution comes, help us stand.

When temptation comes, give us strength.

When disappointment comes, remind us of Your faithfulness.

When the cares of this world try to choke the Word, turn our attention back toward Jesus.

Father, make our hearts good ground.

Let Your Word grow inside us until our lives produce abundant fruit for Your Kingdom—thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.

And when the hurricanes of life come, may our roots run so deeply into Jesus Christ that we remain standing.

Make us Hurricane Proof Christians.

In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!
