In 1 Kings 12:1–11, we see a powerful and sobering leadership lesson unfold.

Rehoboam, faced with a critical decision, sought counsel—but then made a fatal mistake. He rejected the wisdom of seasoned elders and instead followed the advice of those who echoed his pride.

“But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him.” (1 Kings 12:8)

This moment changed everything.

It wasn’t a lack of guidance that caused his downfall—it was a lack of discernment.

As believers and leaders, we must understand that not every voice carries truth. Some voices are rooted in wisdom and aligned with God’s heart. Others are influenced by pride, emotion, or self-interest.

In The Spirit-Filled Business Leader, this principle is clear: Spirit-filled leadership requires Spirit-led discernment—especially in who we listen to.

The wrong voices will often appeal to our flesh. They will validate pride, justify harshness, and encourage control.

But the right voices—Godly voices—will challenge us, humble us, and align us with God’s will.

Proverbs 11:14 reminds us:

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”

And ultimately, the greatest counselor we have is the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said in John 16:13 that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth.

The question is: are we listening?

The voices you allow into your life will shape your decisions, your leadership, and your future.

Choose wisely.

Declaration

I am led by the Holy Spirit and not by the voices of pride or fear. I have discernment to recognize truth and reject deception. God surrounds me with wise counsel that aligns with His will. My decisions are guided by truth, humility, and wisdom.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, give me discernment to recognize the right voices in my life. Help me to reject every influence that is not from You, and to embrace wisdom, truth, and godly counsel. Holy Spirit, speak clearly to me, and give me the courage to follow Your leading—even when it is difficult. Guard my heart and my mind, and align every decision with Your perfect will. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
