“To another different kinds of tongues…” – 1 Corinthians 12:10
The gift of tongues is one of the most misunderstood—and underused—gifts in the Church today. But it’s powerful, biblical, and for every Spirit-filled believer.
And it’s not just one thing. The Bible speaks of four different kinds of tongues, each with a unique purpose.
The 4 Different Kinds of Tongues:
- Personal Prayer Language
Used in private prayer for spiritual edification.
📖 “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…” – 1 Corinthians 14:4 - Tongues with Interpretation (for public use)
This is for corporate worship settings and must be interpreted.
📖 “If anyone speaks in a tongue… let someone interpret.” – 1 Corinthians 14:27–28 - Missionary Tongues (known languages)
Like on the Day of Pentecost when people heard the Gospel in their native tongue.
📖 “Each of us hears them in our native language…” – Acts 2:8 - Sign Tongues (for unbelievers)
Used by the Spirit as a miraculous sign to reach the lost.
📖 “Tongues are for a sign… to unbelievers.” – 1 Corinthians 14:22
Why It Still Matters Today:
- Praying in tongues builds you up
- Helps you pray God’s will when you don’t know how (Romans 8:26)
- Engages spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:18)
- Brings intimacy and power to your prayer life
- It’s a sign that points to the Gospel
📖 “This promise is for you and your children and for all who are afar off…” – Acts 2:39
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for the gift of tongues. I desire all You’ve made available. Fill me afresh and let rivers of living water flow through me as I pray, worship, and minister in Your power. In Jesus’ name, amen.
