Scripture Focus: Jeremiah 31:31–34; Ezekiel 36:25–27; Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8–10; Acts 2; Romans 8
Throughout this seven-part series, we’ve examined God’s covenants and discovered how they reveal His unfolding plan of redemption.
From the Garden of Eden to Noah, Abraham, Moses, the priesthood, and David, we’ve seen how God’s promises point us toward Jesus Christ.
Now we arrive at the culmination of God’s redemptive plan.
The New Covenant, established through the precious blood of Jesus Christ!
And here’s what makes this covenant extraordinary.
God doesn’t simply promise forgiveness.
He promises transformed hearts, a personal relationship with Him, and the indwelling Holy Spirit!
GOD PROMISED A NEW COVENANT
Jeremiah 31:31 declares:
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.”
God was announcing something greater than the covenant established at Mount Sinai.
The Mosaic Covenant had revealed God’s holiness and established His relationship with Israel.
But the people repeatedly broke that covenant.
They turned toward idols.
They disobeyed God’s commandments.
And they experienced the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness.
Yet God promised a New Covenant.
Jeremiah 31:33 says:
“I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts.”
Under the Mosaic Covenant, God’s commandments were written on tablets of stone.
Under the New Covenant, God promised inward transformation.
This wasn’t simply a promise of additional religious requirements.
It was a promise that God would change His people from within.
THE PROMISE OF COMPLETE FORGIVENESS
Jeremiah 31:34 declares:
“For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Under the Old Covenant, animal sacrifices were offered repeatedly.
But those sacrifices could not accomplish the complete redemption that Jesus Christ would provide.
Hebrews 10:4 says:
“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.”
The sacrificial system pointed toward the need for a perfect sacrifice.
And Jesus Christ became that sacrifice.
Hebrews 10:12 declares:
“But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.”
Jesus offered Himself once for all.
His sacrifice is sufficient.
His blood provides forgiveness.
And through faith in Him, we can be reconciled to God.
JESUS ESTABLISHED THE NEW COVENANT
At the Last Supper, Jesus declared:
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” — Luke 22:20
These words connect Jesus’ coming sacrifice directly to the New Covenant promised by the prophets.
For centuries, God’s people had awaited the fulfillment of His promises.
The sacrifices pointed toward redemption.
The priesthood demonstrated the need for mediation.
The prophets announced the coming Messiah.
And now Jesus Christ was establishing the New Covenant through His own blood.
Hebrews 9:15 identifies Jesus as the Mediator of the New Covenant.
He is our Savior.
He is our Redeemer.
He is our eternal High Priest.
And He is the only way to the Father.
THE PROMISE OF A NEW HEART
Ezekiel 36:26 declares:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.”
God promised to remove the heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh.
This points toward the spiritual transformation available through Jesus Christ.
Second Corinthians 5:17 says:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, we are born again.
We receive new spiritual life.
God begins transforming our desires, attitudes, priorities, and character.
Christianity isn’t simply about adopting a new set of religious beliefs.
It is about entering into a living relationship with Jesus Christ and experiencing the transforming power of God.
THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT
Ezekiel 36:27 contains one of the most extraordinary promises in Scripture.
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes.”
God promised that His Spirit would dwell within His people.
Jesus reaffirmed the promise of the Holy Spirit.
John 14:16–17 describes the Spirit of truth who would dwell with and in His disciples.
And Acts 2 records the extraordinary outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
Acts 2:4 says:
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live for Jesus Christ.
He convicts us of sin.
He leads us into truth.
He produces spiritual fruit.
He equips believers with spiritual gifts.
He helps us pray.
He gives us boldness to proclaim the Gospel.
And He strengthens us to walk in holiness.
Acts 1:8 declares:
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me.”
The Christian life was never intended to be lived through human strength alone.
We are called to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit!
FROM CONDEMNATION TO FREEDOM
Romans 8:1 declares:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Through Jesus Christ, believers receive forgiveness and freedom from the condemnation of sin.
But the New Covenant also provides the power to live differently.
Romans 8:13 teaches that through the Spirit, believers put to death the deeds of the body.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t simply give us an emotional experience during worship.
He transforms our daily lives.
He helps us resist temptation.
He strengthens us to overcome sinful habits.
He produces the character of Jesus Christ within us.
And He leads us into a deeper relationship with our heavenly Father.
HOW THE COVENANTS POINT TO JESUS
As we conclude this series, consider how the covenants reveal God’s unfolding redemptive plan.
1. The Promise in Eden — Genesis 3:15
God promised that the Seed of the woman would defeat the serpent.
Jesus Christ accomplished victory through His death and resurrection.
2. The Covenant With Noah — Genesis 6:18; 9:8–17
God preserved Noah and his family through the flood.
The ark provides a picture of the refuge and salvation available through Jesus Christ.
3. The Covenant With Abraham — Genesis 12; 15; 17; 22
God promised blessing to the nations through Abraham’s Seed.
Jesus Christ is the promised Seed through whom salvation reaches the world.
4. The Mosaic Covenant — Exodus 19–24
God established His covenant with Israel and gave the Law.
The Passover lamb, sacrifices, and tabernacle pointed toward Jesus Christ.
5. The Priestly Covenant — Numbers 25:10–13
God established a covenant of peace with Phinehas and promised an enduring priesthood to his descendants.
The Old Testament priesthood helps us understand our need for a perfect mediator, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, our eternal High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
6. The Davidic Covenant — 2 Samuel 7:8–16
God promised David an enduring royal dynasty.
Jesus Christ is the promised Son of David whose Kingdom will never end.
7. The New Covenant — Jeremiah 31:31–34; Ezekiel 36:25–27
God promised forgiveness, transformed hearts, and the gift of His Spirit.
Jesus Christ established the New Covenant through His blood, and the Holy Spirit brings its transforming power into our lives.
LIVING IN THE NEW COVENANT TODAY
The New Covenant is not simply a theological concept.
It is the foundation of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Through the New Covenant, we receive forgiveness.
We are justified through faith.
We become new creations.
We receive the Holy Spirit.
We have access to our heavenly Father.
And we are empowered to live lives that glorify Jesus Christ.
But these blessings should produce a response.
We should walk by faith.
We should pursue holiness.
We should obey God’s Word.
We should proclaim the Gospel.
We should exercise our spiritual gifts in love.
And we should live every day surrendered to the Holy Spirit.
The promises were revealed in the Old Testament. Redemption was accomplished by Jesus Christ. And the Holy Spirit empowers us to live in the blessings of the New Covenant!
