Scripture Focus: Genesis 12:1–3; Genesis 15; Genesis 17; Genesis 22; Romans 4; Galatians 3

Thousands of years before Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, God made an extraordinary promise to a man named Abraham.

God promised to bless Abraham, make him into a great nation, give his descendants a land, and bring blessing to all the families of the earth through him.

At first glance, this might appear to be simply the story of God’s relationship with one man and his descendants.

But the New Testament reveals something much greater.

God’s covenant with Abraham points directly toward Jesus Christ and the salvation available to people from every nation!

And through Jesus, believers can receive the promised Holy Spirit.

GOD’S PROMISE REQUIRED FAITH

Genesis 12:1 records God calling Abram to leave his country and travel to a land God would show him.

Abraham didn’t receive a detailed explanation of every step.

He received a promise.

And he responded in faith.

Hebrews 11:8 tells us:

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance.”

This is one of the most important lessons of Abraham’s life.

Faith doesn’t require understanding every detail of God’s plan.

Faith requires trusting the God who made the promise.

We may not know how God will accomplish everything He has spoken.

We may not understand His timing.

We may encounter circumstances that appear impossible.

But genuine faith continues trusting God’s character and His Word.

ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD

Genesis 15 describes Abraham struggling with the reality that he and Sarah had no child together.

Yet God promised that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars.

Genesis 15:6 says:

“And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”

This verse becomes foundational to the Apostle Paul’s explanation of salvation.

Romans 4 teaches that Abraham was counted righteous through faith, not through keeping the Law of Moses.

The Law would not be given until centuries later.

Likewise, under the New Covenant, we are justified through faith in Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1 declares:

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Our salvation isn’t something we earn through good works.

It is a gift of God’s grace received through faith.

And genuine faith produces obedience.

THE BLOOD COVENANT

In Genesis 15, God instructed Abraham to prepare animals for a covenant ceremony.

The animals were divided, and Abraham later fell into a deep sleep.

Then Scripture describes a smoking oven and burning torch passing between the pieces.

This remarkable event emphasizes God’s commitment to His covenant promise.

The fulfillment of the covenant depended upon God’s faithfulness.

Under the New Covenant, our redemption rests upon the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Luke 22:20 records Jesus declaring:

“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”

The covenant with Abraham involved a solemn ceremony with sacrificed animals.

The New Covenant was established through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 9:15 identifies Jesus as the Mediator of the New Covenant.

He accomplished what humanity could never accomplish through its own efforts.

THE PROMISED SEED

One of the most powerful connections appears in Genesis 22.

God tested Abraham’s faith by commanding him to offer Isaac.

Abraham trusted God’s promise, even believing that God could raise Isaac from the dead.

God stopped Abraham before he sacrificed his son and provided a ram instead.

This event beautifully foreshadows God’s provision of Jesus Christ as the ultimate sacrifice for sin.

But there is another extraordinary connection.

Genesis 22:18 says:

“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.”

Galatians 3:16 identifies Christ as the promised Seed.

Through Jesus, God’s blessing reaches people from every nation.

This is the heart of the Gospel.

God’s redemptive purpose was never limited to one geographical region or ethnic group.

Through Jesus Christ, people from every nation can receive salvation.

THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

Galatians 3:13–14 contains one of the most important revelations concerning Abraham’s covenant.

Paul explains that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law.

Then he declares:

“That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

The blessing of Abraham reaches believers through Jesus Christ.

And Paul specifically connects that blessing with receiving the promised Holy Spirit.

This is important because the blessing of Abraham is sometimes reduced to financial prosperity.

But Paul’s emphasis is much greater.

Through Jesus Christ, we receive justification by faith and the promised Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit lives within believers.

He empowers us to resist sin.

He produces spiritual fruit.

He equips believers with spiritual gifts.

He gives us boldness to proclaim the Gospel.

And He enables us to walk in obedience to God’s Word.

The same God who called Abraham to walk by faith calls us to walk by faith today.

And under the New Covenant, we have the extraordinary privilege of living with the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART

Genesis 17 establishes circumcision as the sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and his male descendants.

But Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that God desires more than outward religious observance.

Romans 2:29 speaks of circumcision of the heart by the Spirit.

Colossians 2:11 describes the spiritual circumcision believers receive in Christ.

Under the New Covenant, God transforms us from within.

We aren’t simply called to perform religious activities.

We are called to become new creations through Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit changes our desires, transforms our character, and empowers us to live holy lives.

THE COVENANT CONNECTIONS

Consider these remarkable similarities between the Abrahamic Covenant and the New Covenant.

1. Faith: Abraham believed God and was counted righteous. We are justified through faith in Jesus Christ.

2. God’s faithfulness: God established His covenant with Abraham. Our salvation rests upon God’s faithfulness and Christ’s finished work.

3. Sacrifice: Abraham’s covenant involved sacrificed animals, and God provided a ram in place of Isaac. Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

4. The promised Seed: God promised blessing through Abraham’s offspring. Jesus Christ is the promised Seed through whom the nations receive salvation.

5. Covenant identity: Circumcision identified Abraham’s covenant household. Through Christ, believers receive spiritual transformation and belong to God’s family.

6. The Holy Spirit: Galatians 3:14 connects the blessing of Abraham with receiving the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

7. An inheritance: Abraham received promises concerning land and descendants. In Christ, believers become heirs according to the promise and receive an eternal inheritance.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR US TODAY

God’s covenant with Abraham reveals that He is faithful to His promises.

It teaches us that faith produces obedience.

It reveals that righteousness is received through faith rather than earned through human effort.

And it points us toward Jesus Christ, the promised Seed.

But perhaps most importantly for Spirit-filled believers, it reminds us that the New Covenant includes the extraordinary gift of the Holy Spirit.

We are not called to live powerless Christian lives.

We are called to walk in faith, obedience, holiness, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Abraham believed the promise. We know the One who fulfilled it. His name is Jesus!

We’ll examine:

* Why God gave Israel the Law.

* How the Passover lamb foreshadowed Jesus.

* Why the blood of the covenant was so significant.

* How Jesus fulfilled the Law.

* Why the New Covenant provides something the Mosaic Covenant could not accomplish.
