Scripture Focus: Genesis 6–9; Hebrews 11:7; 1 Peter 3:18–22; Luke 22:20
When most people think about Noah’s ark, they picture a large wooden boat filled with animals.
But the story of Noah is much more than an account of a worldwide flood.
It reveals God’s judgment against wickedness, His grace toward humanity, His faithfulness to His promises, and His provision for those who trust Him.
And when we examine Noah’s story through the New Testament, we discover remarkable connections to the salvation Jesus Christ provides.
The same God who provided an ark for Noah has provided salvation for us through Jesus Christ!
GRACE IN THE MIDDLE OF JUDGMENT
Genesis 6 describes a world overwhelmed by wickedness.
Humanity had become corrupt, and violence filled the earth.
God declared that judgment was coming.
But Genesis 6:8 tells us:
“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”
Those words reveal something beautiful about God’s character.
Even in the middle of judgment, God demonstrated grace.
He instructed Noah to build an ark that would preserve his family and representatives of the animal kingdom through the flood.
The New Testament tells us that Noah responded in faith.
Hebrews 11:7 says:
“By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household.”
Noah believed God’s Word, and his faith produced obedience.
That same principle applies to our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches that we are saved by grace through faith, not through our own works.
Salvation begins with God’s grace.
Our response is faith.
And genuine faith produces a transformed life.
GOD’S COVENANT WITH NOAH
Genesis 6:18 records God’s promise to establish His covenant with Noah.
After the flood, God confirmed His covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature.
Genesis 9:11 declares:
“Never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
God promised never again to destroy all flesh through a worldwide flood.
He also established the rainbow as the visible sign of His covenant.
Genesis 9:13 says:
“I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.”
The rainbow is a reminder of God’s faithfulness.
God keeps His promises.
And while the Noahic Covenant and the New Covenant contain different promises, both reveal the faithfulness of the same God.
The Noahic Covenant concerns God’s preservation of life and the stability of the created world.
The New Covenant provides forgiveness, reconciliation, and new life through Jesus Christ.
Jesus declared in Luke 22:20:
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
The rainbow reminds us of God’s covenant with Noah.
The blood of Jesus establishes the New Covenant.
THE ARK AS A PICTURE OF SALVATION
God instructed Noah to build the ark according to His directions.
When the flood came, Noah and his family were safe inside the vessel God had provided.
Noah didn’t survive because of his physical strength.
He didn’t survive because he was more intelligent than everyone else.
He survived because he trusted God’s provision and obeyed His instructions.
This provides a powerful picture of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Jesus said in John 10:9:
“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.”
The ark was God’s provision for Noah’s physical preservation.
Jesus Christ is God’s provision for our eternal salvation.
Acts 4:12 declares that salvation is found in no other name.
We cannot save ourselves through good works, religious activity, or personal accomplishments.
We need a Savior.
And God has provided that Savior through Jesus Christ.
GOD SHUT THE DOOR
Genesis 7:16 contains an extraordinary detail.
After Noah and his family entered the ark, Scripture says:
“And the Lord shut him in.”
God Himself shut the door.
What a beautiful reminder of God’s protection and faithfulness.
Jesus said in John 10:28:
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”
Our confidence rests in the power and faithfulness of Jesus Christ.
We are called to remain in Him, continue in faith, and walk in obedience.
But we do not depend upon our own strength to accomplish salvation.
Jesus is our Savior.
He is our refuge.
He is our Redeemer.
THE FLOOD AND CHRISTIAN BAPTISM
One of the most remarkable connections appears in 1 Peter 3:20–21.
Peter describes Noah and his family being saved through water and then connects that event to Christian baptism.
He explains that baptism is not merely an outward washing of the body but is connected to our response toward God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:4 teaches:
“Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Noah passed through the waters of the flood into a new beginning.
Through Jesus Christ, we receive new spiritual life.
Baptism publicly identifies us with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
And the Holy Spirit empowers us to walk in that newness of life.
Second Corinthians 5:17 declares:
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
Salvation isn’t simply an improvement of our old life.
It is the beginning of a new life in Jesus Christ.
NOAH’S SACRIFICE AND THE PERFECT SACRIFICE OF JESUS
After the flood, Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices to God.
Genesis 8:20 describes Noah’s response of worship and thanksgiving.
This points us toward the greater sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 10:12 says:
“But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.”
Noah offered sacrifices in worship.
Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
Under the New Covenant, we don’t need repeated animal sacrifices to obtain forgiveness.
Jesus has accomplished what those sacrifices could never accomplish.
His blood provides cleansing and forgiveness.
His resurrection demonstrates His victory over death.
And through Him, we have access to our heavenly Father.
THE NEW COVENANT AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
There is another powerful difference between Noah’s covenant and the New Covenant.
The ark preserved Noah and his family from physical destruction.
But Jesus Christ does something even greater.
He saves us from sin and gives us new spiritual life.
Ezekiel 36:27 records God’s promise:
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes.”
Under the New Covenant, believers receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit transforms our hearts.
He empowers us to overcome temptation.
He produces spiritual fruit.
He equips believers with spiritual gifts.
He gives us boldness to proclaim the Gospel.
And He helps us walk in obedience to God’s Word.
The ark carried Noah through the flood. Jesus Christ brings us into a new life empowered by the Holy Spirit!
HAVE YOU ENTERED THE PLACE OF SALVATION?
Noah had to respond to God’s Word.
He believed.
He obeyed.
He entered the ark.
Today, God calls every person to respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9 declares:
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Jesus died for our sins.
He shed His blood.
He rose again.
And He offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who believes.
The rainbow reminds us that God keeps His promises.
The Cross reminds us of the price Jesus paid.
And the empty tomb reminds us that our Savior is alive!
The same God who provided an ark for Noah has provided salvation for us through Jesus Christ!

COMING NEXT: PART 3
THE COVENANT OF ABRAHAM: BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING
In our next Daily Walk, we’ll discover one of the most important connections between the Old Testament covenants and the New Covenant.
God promised Abraham that through his Seed, all the nations of the earth would be blessed.
And Galatians 3:16 reveals that the ultimate fulfillment of that promise is found in Jesus Christ!
We’ll examine God’s covenant with Abraham, the significance of faith being credited as righteousness, the promise of the Seed, and how the blessing of Abraham reaches believers through Jesus Christ.
We’ll also explore Galatians 3:14:
“That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
The covenant with Abraham doesn’t merely reveal a promise about the future.
It points us toward Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit!
