Mark 4:3–20
We’ve spent this series asking a very important question:
What does it take to become a Hurricane Proof Christian?
Jesus gives us the answer in the Parable of the Sower.
It’s not enough to hear the Word.
It’s not enough to become excited about the Word.
It’s not even enough to begin growing.
We need roots deep enough to endure and lives fruitful enough to demonstrate that God’s Word has transformed us.
Jesus said:
“But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” — Mark 4:20
That’s where God wants us.
Good ground.
Deep roots.
Abundant fruit.
A faith that survives the hurricane.
Anybody Can Praise God in Good Weather
It’s easy to declare that God is faithful when everything is going well.
The bills are paid.
The family is healthy.
The job is secure.
Relationships are good.
Prayers seem to be answered.
The weather is beautiful.
But what happens when the forecast changes?
What happens when something you never expected suddenly enters your life?
What happens when the diagnosis comes?
What happens when the relationship breaks?
What happens when the money isn’t there?
What happens when someone you trusted betrays you?
What happens when you’ve prayed and prayed, but you haven’t seen the answer yet?
That’s when roots matter.
Jesus warned that some people receive the Word with gladness, but when tribulation or persecution arises, they stumble because “they have no root in themselves.”
The storm didn’t cause their lack of roots.
The storm exposed it.
Build Before the Hurricane
Nobody in Florida waits until hurricane-force winds arrive before deciding to prepare the house.
Preparation happens beforehand.
Spiritually, the same principle applies.
Build your prayer life now.
Learn God’s Word now.
Learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit now.
Develop your worship life now.
Build relationships with strong believers now.
Learn how to stand upon God’s promises now.
Pray in the Spirit now.
Because when the hurricane comes, you want something already established inside you.
Psalm 1 describes the person who delights in God’s Word:
“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither.” — Psalm 1:3
Notice that tree isn’t merely alive.
It’s fruitful.
That’s the picture of a Hurricane Proof Christian.
Don’t Let the Thorns Grow Back
Jesus also warns about another threat to our spiritual lives.
Not persecution.
Not tribulation.
Distraction.
He describes seed falling among thorns:
“The cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” — Mark 4:19
Some Christians aren’t destroyed by a dramatic storm.
They’re slowly suffocated by ordinary life.
We’re busy.
We’re working.
We’re making money.
We’re scrolling.
We’re watching.
We’re planning.
We’re pursuing goals.
We’re building careers.
We’re chasing the next thing.
And if we’re not careful, Jesus slowly gets pushed toward the edge.
That’s why maintaining good soil requires attention.
Weeds don’t usually need help growing.
A garden does.
We have to continually ask the Holy Spirit:
“Is there anything growing in my life that is choking what You are trying to produce?”
If there is, pull it out.
Stay Filled With the Holy Spirit
We cannot live the Christian life successfully through human strength alone.
Jesus promised us the power of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8 says:
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me.”
Hurricane Proof Christians aren’t merely determined people.
They’re empowered people.
We need the Holy Spirit.
We need His power.
We need His guidance.
We need His gifts.
We need His conviction.
We need His comfort.
We need His strength.
We need His supernatural empowerment to accomplish what God has called us to do.
When your natural strength says, “I can’t do this anymore,” the Holy Spirit can strengthen you from within.
Paul prayed in Ephesians 3:16 that believers would be “strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.”
That’s hurricane strength.
Something supernatural happening inside you that enables you to withstand what’s happening around you.
Your Roots Determine Your Response
Two people can experience similar storms and respond completely differently.
One walks away from God.
Another runs toward Him.
One becomes bitter.
Another becomes stronger.
One says, “God abandoned me.”
Another says, “I don’t understand this, but I still trust God.”
What’s the difference?
Often, it’s the roots.
When God’s Word has developed deep roots inside you, something powerful happens when the wind starts blowing.
The Word comes out.
Fear says, “You’re finished.”
The Word says:
“If God is for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31
The enemy says, “You’re alone.”
The Word says:
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5
Circumstances say, “It’s impossible.”
The Word says:
“For with God nothing will be impossible.” — Luke 1:37
Your emotions say, “I can’t continue.”
The Word says:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
That’s why we put the Word inside us before the storm.
Don’t Just Survive — Produce Fruit
Mark 4:20 is where this entire series should lead us.
Jesus doesn’t merely say the good soil survived.
It produced.
Thirtyfold.
Sixtyfold.
A hundredfold.
God isn’t calling us simply to survive Christianity until we reach Heaven.
He wants our lives producing Kingdom fruit right now.
People should encounter Jesus because we are here.
People should be encouraged because we are here.
People should hear the Gospel because we are here.
People should experience love because we are here.
People should be prayed for because we are here.
People should discover hope because we are here.
That’s fruit.
And sometimes your greatest fruit will grow from the very storm you thought would destroy you.
Your Storm Can Become Your Testimony
Revelation 12:11 says:
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”
Don’t underestimate your testimony.
Somebody needs to hear:
“I’ve been through that.”
“I know what that feels like.”
“I thought I wasn’t going to make it either.”
“But Jesus was faithful.”
The thing you once prayed desperately for God to get you through may become the very testimony God uses to encourage someone else.
Your hurricane can become your testimony.
Your battle can become somebody else’s encouragement.
Your scars can remind someone else that healing is possible.
Your survival can become evidence that Jesus is faithful.
Still Standing
There is something powerful about coming through a storm and looking back.
The wind blew.
But you’re still standing.
The rain fell.
You’re still standing.
The enemy attacked.
You’re still standing.
You cried.
You’re still standing.
You had questions.
You’re still standing.
You didn’t understand everything God was doing.
But you’re still standing.
And maybe you’re not standing because you were so strong.
Maybe you’re standing because Jesus held you when you didn’t have the strength to hold yourself.
That’s grace.
That’s faithfulness.
That’s Jesus.
Become Hurricane Proof
So as we finish this series, examine your spiritual foundation.
How deep are your roots?
What kind of soil is your heart?
Are there rocks preventing God’s Word from going deeper?
Are there thorns choking your spiritual life?
Have the cares of this world become more important than God’s Kingdom?
Ask the Holy Spirit to search you.
Then make a decision.
I will become good ground.
I will hear the Word.
I will receive the Word.
I will obey the Word.
I will live the Word.
I will stand upon the Word.
And I will produce fruit.
The hurricane may come.
The winds may blow.
The rain may fall.
Circumstances may change.
But Jesus Christ does not change.
So put your roots down deep.
Stay filled with the Holy Spirit.
Keep your heart free from thorns.
Keep producing fruit.
And when the storm finally passes, may you be able to stand there and declare:
The storm came.
Jesus kept me.
And I’m still standing!
That’s a Hurricane Proof Christian.
Declaration
I declare that I am rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ. The Word of God is planted deeply within my heart, and I will not be uprooted by the storms of life. I refuse to allow fear, worry, persecution, worldly desires, or the cares of this life to choke God’s Word. I will remain filled with the Holy Spirit and strengthened by His power. I will hear God’s Word, receive God’s Word, obey God’s Word, and produce abundant Kingdom fruit. The wind may blow and the storm may rage, but Jesus Christ is my foundation. When the storm passes, I will still be standing, still believing, still worshiping, still serving, and still producing fruit. I am becoming a Hurricane Proof Christian. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Prayer
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, we surrender our hearts completely to You.
Holy Spirit, search the soil of our hearts.
Remove every stone preventing Your Word from developing deeper roots.
Pull out every thorn that is choking what You desire to produce.
Forgive us for allowing the cares of this world, money, ambitions, distractions, entertainment, relationships, or anything else to compete with You for first place.
Lord, deepen our roots.
Give us an unquenchable hunger for Your Word.
Strengthen our prayer lives.
Teach us to recognize Your voice.
Fill us afresh with the Holy Spirit.
Release supernatural strength into every believer walking through a hurricane right now.
For the person who feels like giving up, strengthen them.
For the person overwhelmed by fear, release Your peace.
For the person facing sickness, we stand in faith for healing.
For the person facing financial pressure, we ask for supernatural provision.
For the family under attack, bring restoration.
For the believer facing spiritual warfare, strengthen them with the power of the Holy Spirit.
And Father, use every storm we’ve survived for Your glory.
Turn battles into testimonies.
Turn pain into ministry.
Turn adversity into spiritual maturity.
Let our lives produce fruit—thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.
And when the winds stop blowing and the storm has passed, let us stand boldly and declare:
Jesus kept me.
Jesus strengthened me.
Jesus never left me.
And by the grace of God, I’m still standing!
Make us deeply rooted, Word-filled, Spirit-empowered, fruit-producing Hurricane Proof Christians.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!
