One phrase echoes throughout Solomon’s magnificent prayer in 2 Chronicles 6:

“Hear from heaven.”

Solomon knew Israel would face difficult days. There would be sin, enemies, drought, disease, war, captivity, failure, repentance, and restoration.

So Solomon asked God to establish something that His people could always depend upon: when they turned toward God and prayed, would God hear them?

In 2 Chronicles 6:19 Solomon prays, “Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O LORD my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You.”

The Hebrew word translated “prayer” in verse 20 is tephillah, a rich word carrying the ideas of prayer, supplication, and intercession. It occurs more than 75 times in the Old Testament, including frequently in the Psalms.

Prayer is not merely a religious exercise. It is communication with God. Supplication brings our needs before Him. Intercession stands before God on behalf of someone else.

Solomon asked that God’s eyes would remain open toward the temple “day and night” (2 Chronicles 6:20).

Under the New Covenant, believers have an extraordinary privilege. Through Jesus Christ, we have direct access to the Father.

Hebrews 4:16 tells us to “come boldly to the throne of grace.”

We do not have to wait until Sunday. We do not have to be inside a church building. We do not have to find perfect words.

We can pray wherever we are.

Sometimes, however, our greatest challenge isn’t beginning to pray. It is continuing to pray when we haven’t seen the answer.

Daniel 10 provides an extraordinary picture. Daniel had been praying and fasting for three weeks when an angel finally arrived. Yet the angel told him, “From the first day that you set your heart to understand… your words were heard” (Daniel 10:12).

From the first day!

Daniel had not seen the answer, but heaven had heard the prayer.

This should encourage anyone who has been praying for something for a long time.

A delayed answer does not automatically mean an unheard prayer.

Jesus taught in Luke 18:1 that His followers “always ought to pray and not lose heart.”

Perhaps you have stopped praying about something because disappointment convinced you nothing would change.

Perhaps it is time to pray again.

Pray again for that son or daughter.

Pray again for that marriage.

Pray again for healing.

Pray again for that person who needs Jesus.

Pray again for revival.

Pray again for your church.

Pray again for your community.

Pray again for your nation.

And remember that prayer is not simply asking God to fulfill our personal wishes. First John 5:14 tells us that our confidence is that when we ask according to God’s will, “He hears us.”

Our confidence isn’t that God must do everything exactly as we prescribe.

Our confidence is in the character of the God who hears us.

There will be times when we don’t know what to pray. Romans 8:26 tells us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us.

There will be times when we feel overwhelmed. We can pray like Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:12:

“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”

That is a powerful prayer.

“I don’t know what to do, God—but I know where to look.”

Solomon’s prayer teaches us that whatever season God’s people face, prayer must remain central.

Don’t stop praying because you haven’t seen the answer.

Don’t stop interceding because circumstances look impossible.

Don’t allow disappointment to convince you that God has abandoned you.

Ask.

Seek.

Knock.

Worship while you wait.

Trust God’s wisdom.

Trust God’s timing.

And keep your eyes upon Him.

Because through Jesus Christ, we can still confidently cry:

“Father, hear from heaven.”

Declaration

I declare that my God hears prayer. Through Jesus Christ, I have access to the throne of grace. I refuse to allow disappointment, delay, circumstances, or feelings to silence my prayer life. I will pray when I see the answer and when I am still waiting. I will intercede for my family, the lost, the hurting, the Church, my community, and my nation. I will pray according to God’s Word and trust His wisdom and timing. I will not lose heart. My eyes are upon the Lord, and my confidence is in the God who hears from heaven.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You hear Your children.

Thank You for giving me access to Your presence through Jesus Christ.

Forgive me for the times I stopped praying because I became discouraged. Forgive me for interpreting silence as absence and delay as rejection.

Strengthen my faith today.

Lord, hear from heaven.

Hear my prayers for my family and loved ones.

Hear my prayers for salvation, healing, restoration, provision, deliverance, and revival.

Holy Spirit, help me when I don’t know how to pray. Teach me to pray according to the heart and will of God.

Make me an intercessor.

Place people upon my heart and teach me to stand in the gap for them.

When I cannot see what You are doing, help me trust Your character.

When answers seem delayed, help me remain faithful.

When circumstances look impossible, remind me that nothing is impossible with You.

I will pray and not lose heart.

I will ask.

I will seek.

I will knock.

And while I wait, I will worship.

My eyes are upon You.

Father, hear from heaven.
