One of the most overlooked areas of Christian discipleship is the stewardship of our physical bodies. While believers often focus on spiritual growth, prayer, worship, and Bible study, many rarely consider how their eating habits and lifestyle choices fit into their walk with Christ.
In this special message, fitness and nutrition expert Angela Amburgey joins Pastor Bill Zeltman for an honest and biblical discussion about diets, nutrition, gluttony, self-control, and honoring God through healthy living.
The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
As Christians, we understand the importance of protecting God’s temple from sinful influences. Yet many believers never stop to consider whether unhealthy habits, overeating, poor stewardship, and a lack of self-control can also impact the temple God has entrusted to us.
The Bible frequently lists gluttony alongside other serious sins. This should cause us to pause and examine our hearts. While food itself is not sinful, allowing food to control us rather than submitting our appetites to the Lord can become a spiritual issue.
God created food to nourish us, strengthen us, and be enjoyed with thanksgiving. However, when eating becomes driven by emotions, excess, stress, or lack of discipline, it can lead us away from the self-control that Scripture identifies as a fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 tells us:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
Self-control is not merely about resisting temptation in obvious areas of life. It also applies to our daily choices regarding food, exercise, rest, and overall health.
One of the key verses discussed in this message is 1 Corinthians 10:31:
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
Notice the breadth of Paul’s statement. He does not limit glorifying God to church attendance, prayer meetings, or ministry activities. He says whatever you do—including eating and drinking—should be done for God’s glory.
This challenges us to ask important questions:
Am I honoring God with my body?
Am I exercising self-control?
Am I making choices that strengthen me for God’s purposes?
Am I being a faithful steward of the health God has given me?
The goal is not legalism, perfection, or guilt. The goal is stewardship. God has entrusted us with one body during our earthly journey, and He calls us to honor Him with every area of our lives.
Healthy living is not about appearance. It is about obedience, discipline, stewardship, and maximizing our effectiveness for the Kingdom of God.
As believers, we should strive to bring every area of our lives—including our eating habits, exercise routines, and lifestyle choices—under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
When we do, we become better equipped to serve, minister, work, worship, and fulfill the calling God has placed upon our lives.
Declaration
Today I declare that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. I belong to God and have been purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ. I will honor Him with my choices, my habits, and my lifestyle. I receive wisdom, discipline, and self-control through the power of the Holy Spirit. I reject unhealthy strongholds and embrace godly stewardship. Every decision I make will bring glory to God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of life and for the body You have entrusted to me. Forgive me for the times I have failed to be a faithful steward of Your temple. Help me to develop greater self-control, wisdom, and discipline through the power of Your Holy Spirit.
Lord, give me the strength to make choices that honor You. Help me overcome unhealthy habits and replace them with habits that bring glory to Your name. Teach me to view food, fitness, and health through the lens of Scripture and not merely through the standards of the world.
May my life reflect Your goodness in every area. Let my body, mind, and spirit be fully surrendered to You so that I can serve You effectively and fulfill the purpose You have for my life.
I declare victory over temptation, strength over weakness, and discipline over excess. I thank You that through Christ I can do all things and that Your grace empowers me to live a life that honors You.
In Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
