One of the most important distinctions in the Christian life is the difference between justification and sanctification.
Justification is a legal act of God whereby He declares the sinner righteous based solely on the finished work of Jesus Christ. As Romans 5:1 declares, we have been justified by faith and now have peace with God. This is not based on our performance, but on Christ’s perfect righteousness credited to us.
Sanctification, however, is the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit within us. While justification changes our standing before God, sanctification changes our heart, mind, and behavior. It is the process of being conformed into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18).
These two truths must never be separated. Justification is instantaneous and complete, while sanctification is progressive and lifelong. Justification removes the guilt of sin; sanctification breaks its power.
True salvation will always produce transformation. As Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, we are created in Christ Jesus for good works. These works are not the root of salvation—but they are the fruit.
The believer’s life is not about striving to be accepted, but about living from acceptance while pursuing holiness through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Declaration
I declare that I am justified by faith and made righteous through the blood of Jesus Christ. I am no longer bound by sin, and I walk in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. I am being sanctified daily and conformed into the image of Christ. I will live holy, set apart, and pleasing to God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You that I have been justified by faith and made righteous through Jesus Christ. Thank You that my standing before You is secure, not because of my works, but because of His finished work on the cross. Holy Spirit, continue Your sanctifying work in me. Remove anything in my life that does not reflect Christ. Strengthen me to walk in holiness, to die to the flesh, and to live in obedience to Your Word. Transform my heart, renew my mind, and shape my life so that I reflect Your glory. Let my life be evidence of Your power at work within me. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
