We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). We cannot earn it. We do not deserve it. It is the free gift of God.
Yet Peter commands believers to “make every effort” to grow in grace (2 Peter 1:5; 3:18).
Is this a contradiction?
Not at all.
Grace saves us completely — but grace also empowers transformation. We do not strive to earn salvation. We strive because we are grateful for it. As God works in us, we cooperate and “work out” what He is working in (Philippians 2:12–13).
Peter describes two types of believers in 2 Peter:
Those who grow:
• Add to their faith
• Become effective
• Live holy lives
• Enter the kingdom richly
Those who drift:
• Become blind
• Follow deception
• Return to old patterns
Grace is not passive. It is powerful. But it must be stewarded.
The key to growth is walking in the Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit. Feeding on the Word. Praying. Worshiping. Fellowshipping. Resisting sin.
We renew our spiritual strength daily — just as we renew our physical strength daily.
The question is not whether grace is sufficient.
The question is — are we cooperating with it?

Father, thank You for Your saving grace.
Teach me to steward that grace well.
