Have you considered the true cost of discipleship?

In Matthew 8:18–22, three individuals expressed a willingness to follow Jesus. Yet each one revealed a divided heart.

The first prioritized security.

The second prioritized inheritance.

The third prioritized approval.

Each said, “Lord, I will follow You—but let me first…”

The issue was not willingness. It was priority.

Immediately following this passage, Jesus declares that the harvest is great but the laborers are few. The connection is clear: the laborers are few because few are willing to place Christ above comfort, finances, and reputation.

True discipleship demands first place.

Matthew 6:33 reminds us:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

When Jesus is first, everything else finds its proper order.

Declaration

I declare that Jesus Christ is first in my life. I will not place security, money, or approval above obedience. I fix my hand to the plow and I will not look back. I am a laborer in God’s harvest.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, search my heart. Remove every competing priority that has tried to take first place. Give me boldness to follow You without hesitation. Break fear of lack. Break fear of man. Teach me to seek first Your Kingdom and trust You with the rest. Make me a faithful laborer in Your harvest field. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
