“The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.” —2 Peter 2:9

When Jesus taught us to pray, “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13), He wasn’t implying that God plays tricks on us. James 1:13 reminds us that God tempts no one. Instead, this part of the Lord’s Prayer is a declaration of victory: we are placing our trust in God to deliver us whenever trials and temptations arise.

What Temptation Really Means

Temptation has two dimensions:

1.   The adversary’s attack—Satan’s attempt to lure us into sin.

2.   The believer’s opportunity—When we overcome temptation, it builds strength and solidifies our faith.

Even Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to face Satan (Matthew 4:1). He overcame, and afterward walked in power and authority.

God’s Promise of Escape

The Apostle Paul reassures us: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful… with the temptation will also make the way of escape” (1 Corinthians 10:13). That means temptation is not sin—but giving in to it is. And God promises us a way out every time.

2 Timothy 4:18 declares: “The Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom.” This is the confidence of obedient faith.

Obedient Faith in Action

When we pray, “Deliver us from the evil one,” we are not asking God to shield us from all struggle. We are committing ourselves in advance to walk in His victory, trusting Him for the strength to resist the enemy and overcome.

Temptation knocks at everyone’s door, but we don’t have to let it in. Meet it early, resist it in faith, and lean on God’s power to overcome.

Declaration

I declare that God delivers me from every temptation. I will not be overcome, for the Lord always provides a way of escape.

Prayer

Father, I thank You that You are faithful to deliver me from every temptation. Strengthen me by Your Spirit to resist the enemy and to walk in obedience to Your Word. Help me to live daily in victory, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
