“If God formed His opinion of you based solely on your words… would He be pleased?”
In Part 5 of our James series, we turn a spiritual magnifying glass on one of the smallest, yet most dangerous parts of the human body—the tongue.
James 3 challenges us with convicting truth: “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity… full of deadly poison.” While we use it to praise God, we often use the same tongue to tear down His image-bearers.
Key Highlights from the Message:
Teachers & Leaders Are Held to a Higher Standard
James opens with a sobering reminder: “Not many of you should become teachers…” (James 3:1). If you lead others spiritually—whether you’re a pastor, teacher, parent, or influencer—you’re held accountable for your words and doctrine. Leadership is not a popularity contest, it’s a sacred calling.
Spiritual Maturity Starts With Speech
James 3:2 tells us that a person who can control their tongue is “perfect”—teleios in Greek—meaning spiritually complete or mature. Taming the tongue is not just about manners; it’s a mark of spiritual growth.
Small Organ, Big Impact
From bits in horses’ mouths to rudders on ships, James gives powerful illustrations of how something small can steer something massive. Your words can guide lives—or destroy them.
The Fire of the Tongue
Words are like sparks. And sparks start wildfires. Think of relationships damaged, churches divided, and reputations destroyed by just a few careless words. As James says, “the tongue is set on fire by hell” (v.6).
We Bless God, Then Curse People?
James confronts our inconsistency: “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” (v.10). It’s time for Christians to stop Sunday sanctification and weekday slander.
What Flows Out, Flows From Within
You don’t get fresh water from a salty spring. If your mouth is bitter, your heart might be, too. As Jesus said in Luke 6:45, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”
Three Closing Challenges:
- You May Be the Only “Christian” Some People Know
Your words either reflect Christ or repel others from Him.
- Are You Speaking Words That Help Others Hear the Gospel?
People are listening—even when you don’t realize it. Be a voice of truth, not a stumbling block.
- Are You Showing the Love of Jesus with Your Tongue?
Is your speech filled with grace? Or gossip?
Let’s get on our knees and ask the Holy Spirit to do heart surgery—and teach us to speak life, not death.
