“To another the interpretation of tongues…” – 1 Corinthians 12:10

When someone speaks in tongues publicly, it can feel like a mystery to everyone listening. But God never meant for His Church to stay in the dark. He gave us the Gift of Interpretation of Tongues so that Spirit-filled messages could be understood and edifying.

What Is This Gift?

The interpretation of tongues is the Holy Spirit-empowered ability to interpret the message given through someone speaking in tongues.

It’s not a direct, word-for-word translation—it’s a Spirit-inspired understanding of what was spoken.

“Let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.” – 1 Corinthians 14:13

Why It’s Needed:

  • It brings understanding to the church
  • It allows tongues to function like prophecy (1 Cor. 14:5)
  • It keeps public gatherings orderly (1 Cor. 14:27–28)
  • It turns mystery into meaning

“God is not the author of confusion…” – 1 Corinthians 14:33

Is It for Today?

YES.
Just like all the gifts of the Spirit, this one is active today. God still speaks. Tongues are still spoken. And His desire is still for His Church to be built up, not bewildered.

“Eagerly desire spiritual gifts…” – 1 Corinthians 14:1

If someone speaks in tongues publicly, we should believe and expect an interpretation—whether through that same person, or someone else in the room.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, I want all You have for me. I ask You to stir up the gift of interpretation in me. Help me to understand the spiritual messages You are releasing—and give me boldness to speak clearly for the edification of others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
