“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
1 John 1:8

In a world full of masks, filters, and self-justification, one of the hardest things to do is look in the mirror with honesty. Yet Scripture calls us not only to examine ourselves—but to do so with God’s help.

1 Corinthians 11:28 tells us to “examine ourselves” before taking communion. Why? Because it matters to God that our hearts are clean, not just our habits. David prays in Psalm 139:23–24:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me…”

He doesn’t stop at looking inward—he invites God to look with him.

Self-deception is subtle. It happens when we:

  • Justify sin instead of confessing it
  • Compare ourselves to others instead of to Christ
  • Listen to the Word but never live it out (James 1:22)

But here’s the good news: God is not looking for perfect people. He’s looking for honest hearts.

When we come clean, He washes us clean.
When we invite truth, He gives grace.
When we examine ourselves, He transforms us.

Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to live in self-deception. Help me be honest with myself and open with You. Shine Your light in every area of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
