Introduction: A Prophetic Roadmap to the End Times

Among the many powerful prophetic voices in Scripture, Ezekiel stands out for his vivid, God-given visions of Israel’s future. In chapters 37 through 39, we see one of the most remarkable sequences in the entire Bible: Israel reborn, united, and then attacked—only to be miraculously rescued by the hand of God.

But how do these ancient words apply to today’s world and the last days? Let’s walk through these three chapters and uncover what they reveal about the unfolding end-time plan of God.

Ezekiel 37: The Valley of Dry Bones and Israel’s Rebirth

God brings Ezekiel to a valley full of dry, lifeless bones and asks, “Can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3). As Ezekiel prophesies, the bones assemble, flesh grows on them, and the breath of life enters them. This vision represents:

Key Prophetic Meanings:

  • National Restoration: “These bones are the whole house of Israel” (v.11). The Jewish people, long scattered, will return to the land.
  • 1948 Fulfillment? Many scholars point to the rebirth of Israel in 1948 as a partial fulfillment of this prophecy.
  • Spiritual Revival Still Ahead: Although physically restored, Israel’s full spiritual awakening to Jesus as Messiahis yet to come (Romans 11:25–27).

The Two Sticks Become One: Unity Under One King

Ezekiel is instructed to join two sticks—one representing Judah and one Ephraim (Israel)—into one in his hand (Ezekiel 37:15–28).

“I will make them one nation in the land… and one King shall be King over them all.” – Ezekiel 37:22

Messianic Significance:

  • Reunification of God’s People: No more northern and southern kingdom—Israel will be one.
  • One Shepherd – the Messiah: “My servant David will be king over them” (v.24), pointing to Jesus Christ, the Son of David.
  • Millennial Kingdom Preview: This speaks to the coming 1,000-year reign of Christ where Israel lives in peace and obedience (Revelation 20:4–6).

Ezekiel 38–39: The War of Gog and Magog

These chapters describe a future invasion of Israel by a confederation of nations led by Gog from the land of Magog(Ezekiel 38:1–6). Among the allies:

  • Persia (modern Iran)
  • Cush (Sudan)
  • Put (Libya)
  • Gomer & Togarmah (regions in modern Turkey)

“You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, covering the land.” – Ezekiel 38:16

What Happens?

  • The Invasion: Gog leads a massive army against a peaceful and secure Israel.
  • Divine Intervention: God destroys the invaders with earthquakes, fire, and hailstones (Ezekiel 38:22).
  • Aftermath:
    • 7 months to bury the dead (Ezekiel 39:12)
    • 7 years of burning enemy weapons (Ezekiel 39:9)

When Does the Gog-Magog War Take Place?

Bible scholars hold different views, but the three most common are:

1. Before the Tribulation

  • Fits a peaceful Israel prior to the chaos of the 7-year Tribulation.
  • May set the stage for the Antichrist’s covenant (Daniel 9:27).

2. During the Tribulation

  • Possibly mid-way, aligning with the breaking of peace and global war.

3. After the Millennium

  • Revelation 20:7–9 also describes a Gog-Magog event, but it may be a separate war that shares a symbolic name.

Note: Ezekiel’s war ends with the burial of bodies and weapons used for fuel, whereas Revelation’s Gog-Magog ends in final judgment. These are likely distinct.

Modern Parallels: Is This Prophecy Beginning to Align?

Today’s headlines echo Ezekiel’s vision:

  • Russia, Iran, and Turkey—nations mentioned or implied in the prophecy—are forming military ties in the Middle East.
  • Israel is prosperous, relatively secure, and increasingly isolated on the world stage.
  • Hostility toward Israel continues to rise in global forums.

Could this prophecy be nearer than many think? We are certainly seeing the stage being set.

Final Takeaways for Believers

Whether these events happen in our lifetime or not, Ezekiel 37–39 offers powerful truths for the Church:

  1. God keeps His promises – to Israel and to us.
  2. Jesus will reign as King – no matter what the nations plot.
  3. Be alert and ready – prophecy is not for fear, but for preparation and hope.

“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” – Luke 21:28
