In John 10:27, Jesus makes a powerful statement: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Just as sheep know the voice of their shepherd and will not follow a stranger, so too must we, as believers, be able to discern the voice of Jesus from our own thoughts and the enemy’s lies.

Sheep Follow Only Their Shepherd

Sheep instinctively recognize their shepherd’s voice and ignore all others. This is the picture Jesus paints of His relationship with us—we are to hear Him so clearly that we refuse to follow any voice that leads us astray (John 10:5).

Hearing Comes from Closeness

Many ask, “How do I know if it’s God speaking?” The answer is simple: the closer you are to Him, the clearer His voice becomes. Through daily Bible reading, prayer, and worship, we grow familiar with the Shepherd’s voice. Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”

Prayer Is a Conversation

Too often, our prayers are one-sided. But prayer is a conversation with God. That means we must take time to listen. His voice will always align with His Word and will bring peace, clarity, and direction.

When we truly listen, we discover the joy of walking with the Shepherd who promises to lead us beside still waters and into green pastures (Psalm 23).

Affirmative Declaration

I declare that I will tune my ears to the voice of my Shepherd. I will read His Word daily, listen in prayer, and follow His leading with confidence.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You are my Good Shepherd. Teach me to know Your voice and to discern it from every other voice. Let Your Word shape my hearing and Your Spirit guide my steps. In Jesus’ name, amen.
